Cornish leads Calgary past BC

Oct 12, 2013 - 5:14 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Jon Cornish ran for 130 yards and a touchdown in the Calgary Stampeders' 40-26 win over the B.C. Lions on Friday.

Cornish broke his own record of single-season rushing yards by a Canadian running back (1,457).

After Thomas DeMarco hit Nick Moore for a 6-yard score and then Courtney Taylor for the subsequent two-point conversion to tie the game at 26-26 midway through the fourth, the Stampeders tallied the final 14 points of the contest.

Cornish's 38-yard run down the right sideline on Calgary's ensuing possession led to Clifton Smith's 6-yard major and Chris Randle intercepted DeMarco on the Lions' next touch and returned it 65 yards for the game-sealing score with 1:07 left.

Kevin Glenn was 22-of-37 for 259 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Calgary (12-3), which has won seven of its last eight games.

A Saskatchewan loss this week would give the Stamps a home playoff game.

Marquay McDaniel hauled in six receptions for 87 yards and a score in the triumph.

DeMarco completed 23-of-39 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (9-6), who have dropped back-to-back tilts on the heels of a three-game winning streak.

Calgary jumped out to a 13-0 lead after a quarter of play. Rene Paredes nailed a 12-yard field goal on the Stamps' first drive of the game and Cornish plunged in from two yards out later in the frame. Paredes booted through a 45- yard field goal to cap the scoring in the first.

Paul McCallum split the uprights from 13 yards out to get B.C. on the board early in the second, but Paredes nailed field goals of 43 and 20 yards, respectively, sandwiched around a B.C. single, to give Calgary a 19-4 edge.

DeMarco found Taylor for a 27-yard score to get the Lions within 19-11 heading into the locker room.

Glenn flipped a 20-yard TD pass to McDaniel before DeMarco answered with a 1- yard TD run to cut the gap to 26-18.
