Argonauts cruise past Alouettes

Aug 2, 2014 - 3:05 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Steve Slaton rushed for 52 yards and caught a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Toronto Argonauts to a 31-5 rout of the Montreal Alouettes at Percival Molson Stadium.

Ricky Ray completed 19-of-33 pass attempts for 186 yards and two touchdowns for Toronto (2-4), which became the first team in the East Division to earn two victories this season. Maurice Mann had five receptions for 75 yards and Slaton caught six balls, but for only 48 yards.

"I'll take this win, but we have a lot of work to do, " Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich said. "It was a big step for us with all the injuries we've had."

Troy Smith completed only 5-of-10 passes for 63 yards for Montreal (1-4), while replacement Alex Brink connected on a meager 9-of-23 passes for 60 yards and was also intercepted once.

"I know its the second straight game we haven't scored a touchdown," Montreal head coach Tom Higgins said, while acknowledging the need for better play under center. "We're hoping to move forward at the quarterback position because we are not getting production from that post."

Sean Whyte was responsible for the first two scores of the game, booting a 58- yard single and a 49-yard field goal early on in the first quarter.

Swayze Waters had a chance to put the Argonauts on the scoreboard later in the first frame, but he missed a 42-yard field goal attempt.

Waters got some redemption at the end of the first quarter when he kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the period.

The Alouettes inched ahead early in the second quarter with a 53-yard single from Whyte.

The Argonauts finally found the end zone just before halftime, doing so on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ray to Slaton with 44 seconds left in the half.

Toronto wasted no time adding to its lead after intermission, as Ray found Slaton for a touchdown yet again, this time from five yards out, on the first drive of the second half.

Toronto recorded a pair of safeties early in the fourth quarter to push its lead to 21-5.

A 42-yard field goal from Waters and a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jamie Robinson put an exclamation point on the Argonauts' huge victory.

Game Notes

Chip Cox led all players with eight tackles for Montreal ... Brandon Whitaker rushed for 31 yards on 12 carries ... The Alouettes are averaging just 15 points per game this season ... The Argonauts were playing without receivers Chad Owens and Andre Durie, who are on the six-game injury list ... Toronto has a bye next week ... Montreal faces Edmonton next Thursday.
