Mr Cricket delighted with Thunder finale
Jan 24, 2016 - 6:20 PM Sydney Thunder's maiden Big Bash League title was the perfect farewell for Mike Hussey, but in his customary style, Mr Cricket said Sunday night's win against Melbourne Stars wasn't about him.Hussey made the tough decision to switch from his home town Perth Scorchers to perennial cellar dwellers Thunder two seasons ago and, after holding aloft the BBL05 trophy at the MCG, said it was the best decision he'd ever made.
The 40-year-old will consult with the Australian team at the coming Twenty20 World Cup and hopes to play another Indian Premier League tournament, but has played the last game of his decorated career on Australian soil.
"It's never been about me - it's been about the club and building it for sustainable success. There's no point hanging on too long," Hussey replied when asked if he could be tempted into one more season with Thunder.
"Players will come and go from this club forever and a day but the team has to move forward and keep building - that's what it's all about.
"It's been a long journey, there's been a bit of heartache along the way, but to actually reach the summit with this group of guys has been reward for a lot of hard work for a lot of people.
"I feel like it's a nice way to finish with Sydney Thunder."
Hussey made 18 runs in his last innings before he was bowled by Adam Zampa.
He was given a warm reception by the MCG crowd and was even afforded a guard of honour by Stars players as he made his way to the crease for the last time.
With the game still in the balance, the 47, 672 fans in attendance, most of whom were there in the hope of seeing Stars break through for their first BBL title, stood as one and applauded as he trudged off the MCG.
"It was really nice - as I'm walking out to bat I wasn't really expecting a guard of honour. It was a nice touch from the players," he said.
"As I was walking off I was probably more annoyed at myself for playing such a silly shot at that stage of the game. But I did think to myself that I just had to take a few moments to soak it in.
"It's an amazing stadium and I feel privileged and honoured to have come here and play on this hallowed turf."
