Scorchers back Marsh in Hobart BBL clash
Jan 20, 2017 - 4:59 AM Perth Scorchers will stick with underperforming opening batsman Shaun Marsh for their crucial BBL clash against Hobart Hurricanes. With single-figure contributions from four of his past five starts for the Scorchers, Marsh's efforts prompted consideration of a reshuffle, skipper Adam Voges admitted.
"We've had a little bit of discussion about changing the order but I think we will stick with Shaun," the captain told SportFM on Friday.
"You've just got to keep backing your guys in."
Citing last round's batting collapse against Melbourne Stars in which Perth's top-five batsmen made a combined total of 18 runs, Voges said the "performance was a bit off".
"We will put a bit more emphasis on getting off to a better start (in Hobart)," he added.
Former Test player Voges has overcome a hamstring injury and will be fit for Saturday's fixture at Bellerive Oval where victory will confirm a semi-finals berth for the Scorchers.
"The hammy is good now. It has taken a little bit longer (to heal) than we hoped," Voges said.
Sam Whiteman also returns to the squad, with the duo's comeback squeezing out Cameron Bancroft and Josh Inglis.
Hobart will welcome back spinner Clive Rose at the expense of paceman Sam Rainbird in a must-win proposition for the Hurricanes to make the BBL finals.
The island team must secure a convincing win on Saturday and rely on the outcome of other matches to tip the net run rate standings in their favour.
International star batsman Kumar Sangakkara has been named in the Hurricanes' squad but is not a certainty for the XI after being omitted for the past two games.
His contract with the franchise expires at the end of the season.
