Casse sends out three for Dominion Day Stakes

Jun 26, 2015 - 7:18 PM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Seven older thoroughbreds have been entered for Wednesday's $150,000 Dominion Day Stakes at Woodbine, with trainer Mark Casse saddling three for the 1 1/4 miler.

Casse will saddle Florida Won from the inside post along with Mystery Train and Patrioticandproud leaving from the two outside posts, respectively.

Owned by Live Oak Plantation, Florida Won will be ridden by Patrick Husbands as the 4-year-old chestnut colt makes his second start of the year. Florida Won captured the Ontario Derby at Woodbine last Sept. 21 before returning May 22 with a fifth in an allowance race.

Gary Boulanger has the mount on Mystery Train, owned by Jed Cohen. The 5-year- old recently won the Evangeline Mile to snap a five-race losing streak. He has $511,257 in earnings with nine wins, five seconds and three thirds in 25 career starts.

Patrioticandproud and jockey Eurico Da Silva will leave from the far outside post for owners Gary Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. The 6-year-old gelding has banked $520,833 with four wins, 11 seconds and five thirds from 32 lifetime starts. He is coming off a fourth in the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs on May 23.

Pender Harbour is the wealthiest of the seven entrants with more than $1.8 million. The 7-year-old chestnut gelding, trained by Mike De Paulo, will start from post 4 with Luis Contreras in the saddle.

Pender Harbour, owned by Denny Andrews, Sandra Lazaruk, Bob and Roberta Giffin, claimed the Steady Growth Stakes at Woodbine on June 6 for his 12th career win in 36 starts.

"He's just a tough horse; a warrior," said DePaulo after the race.

Trainer Todd Pletcher will be shipping in Red Rifle with Alan Garcia getting the mount and leaving from post 5. Owned by Twin Creeks Racing, the 5-year-old chestnut gelding won last year's Hawthorne Gold Cup, but is winless in his last four starts. Red Rifle has five wins and five seconds in 17 career starts for $474,270.

Here is the field for the Dominion Day Stakes in post position order: Florida Won, Patrick Husbands; Smooth Stone, Emma-Jayne Wilson; Midnight Aria, Jesse Campbell; Pender Harbour, Luis Contreras; Red Rifle, Alan Garcia; Mystery Train, Gary Boulanger and Patrioticandproud, Eurico Da Silva.
