Cockerton, Flanagan & Walters named MLL Players of the Week

Jul 2, 2014 - 2:09 PM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Week 9's Warrior Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week and the Cascade Rookie of the Week today.

This week, Joe Walters was awarded honors for his offensive contributions that helped lift his Chesapeake Bayhawks for a much needed win against the Florida Launch, and Ryan Flanagan was recognized for leading a team defense that shut down the Boston Cannons and allowed the Charlotte Hounds to take the W. Rookie attackman Mark Cockerton established himself as an offensive threat this weekend, adding six points to the Rochester Rattlers 18-11 victory over the notoriously favored Denver Outlaws.

Walters followed his impressive three-goal performance from the MLL All-Star Game with an eight-point (4g, 4a) effort in the Bayhawks' 18-11 win over the Launch. In the four games he has played, he has helped Chesapeake secure two of their three wins thus far recording a total of five goals and 11 assists.

In what started as a close game and ended in a blowout favoring the Hounds, Flanagan was part of a team defense that completely eliminated any offensive threat the Cannons posed in the fourth quarter. In one-on-one matchups, Flanagan was able to hold down hot-gun Paul Rabil, only allowing him to net one of his six shots on goal. The Hounds now jump to 4-5 while leveling the Cannons back to below .500.

A six point offering from Cockerton was able to elevate the Rattlers to a 6-3 record, just one game in the standings behind the Outlaws. Cockerton netted six goals on six shots in Rochester's blow out over Denver in just his fourth game in the League, demonstrating that the first years adjustment to the professional world of lacrosse is going just fine.

The Chesapeake Bayhawks look to continue their offensive barrage this weekend against the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio. Tune in and celebrate the Fourth of July with the reigning Steinfeld Trophy champs at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on CBS Sports Network. Saturday, watch rookie Cockerton and the Rattlers pay Flanagan and the Hounds a visit at the American Legion Memorial Stadium on ESPN3.com and syndicated channels. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. (ET).
