Braves-Red Sox Preview

Jun 21, 2009 - 3:50 AM By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Atlanta (32-34) at Boston (40-27), 1:35 p.m. EDT

After breaking into the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tim Wakefield won his first four starts against the Atlanta Braves - a span that included the 1992 NL championship series.

Since then, it's Wakefield who's had trouble figuring out how to beat the Braves but he will likely get two chances against them, including Sunday's finale of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Making his first start versus the Braves in more than four years, the veteran knuckleballer will try to keep his perfect home record intact and look to become the AL's third 10-game winner.

Wakefield (9-3, 4.39 ERA) was 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA after his first four matchups against Atlanta, including two wins in the 1992 NLCS that the Pirates lost in seven games. The right-hander, however, is 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in his last 11 appearances against the Braves, including 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA in four starts in that time.

With the teams meeting again next weekend at Turner Field, he could get another opportunity to improve those numbers and perhaps take sole possession of the AL wins lead from Minnesota's Kevin Slowey and injured Toronto ace Roy Halladay.

The knuckleballer comes into the first of those two potential meetings searching for his fourth win in as many starts and his longest streak since winning four consecutive outings from July 27-Aug.13, 2005.

Wakefield made his previous start against the Braves in that season, allowing six runs over five innings in a 7-5 loss at Fenway on May 21, 2005.

Thanks to an average of 10.9 runs of support, he has won all six starts there this season and has eight straight winning decisions at home dating to Sept. 12. Wakefield is also scheduled to make his 381st career start for Boston, putting him one behind Roger Clemens for the most in team history, and will try to lead the AL East-leading Red Sox (41-27) to their fourth straight series win.

After dropping the opener against Atlanta 8-2 on Friday night, Boston bounced back behind Josh Beckett's first shutout since joining the team in 2006.

In Saturday night's 3-0 win, Beckett allowed five singles and walked none to help the Red Sox avoid a season high-tying third straight loss.

"I thought he did everything," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He was economical. That was fun to watch."

Jason Varitek doubled twice off former teammate Derek Lowe and scored two runs to lead Boston to its 13th win in 18 games. The Braves (32-35), who were denied a season high-tying third straight win, dropped to 3-5 on their nine-game road trip and suffered their 15th loss in 24 contests.

While attempting to win its second series since sweeping Toronto from May 22-24, Atlanta will try to help right-hander Jair Jurrjens (5-5, 2.89) snap a three-start losing streak.

Jurrjens, who has never faced the Red Sox, has received one run of support in his three outings this month. He allowed one run over a rain-shortened start Tuesday night in Cincinnati, but took the loss despite pitching two innings.

"Baseball is about luck," Jurrjens said. "You can pitch good and not get the win. You can pitch bad and not get the loss. Right now, I'm not having luck on my side."

Francona said third baseman Mike Lowell is "feeling beat up" and might give him a second straight day off Sunday. The four-time All-Star was 2 for 18 (.111) in his previous five games.
