Diamondbacks win on Montero's 8th inning solo shot

Aug 11, 2010 - 4:37 AM MILWAUKEE(AP) -- Kirk Gibson missed seeing Miguel Montero's home run. He still knew exactly how his team won.

Montero opened the eighth inning with a homer that lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

"You know what?" Gibson asked the reporters. "Seriously, I was looking at my cards. I didn't see it. I looked up. I heard people say, "Carry!"

It certainly did as Montero, a left-handed batter, reached out and drove a first-pitch slider from left-handed reliever Chris Capuano (1-2) to deep center for his fifth home run of the season.

"Our lefties have done good jobs off lefties, they really have," Gibson said as his Diamondbacks have won five of the last six and two straight over the Brewers who had beaten them seven straight before Arizona snapped that streak with a 7-4 victory in 10 innings on Monday night. "Miggy (Montero) got it tonight."

Montero said that he was just trying to hit it hard.

"He left it up, unfortunately for him, fortunately for me," Montero said after Capuano fell to 0-2 in 12 relief appearances this season.

Capuano's contract was selected on May 29 from Triple-A Nashville. Before this season, he had not pitched in the majors since Sept. 28, 2007 against San Diego. He had his second Tommy John surgery on May 15, 2008.

Blaine Boyer (3-2) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth and Sam Demel earned his first career save as Arizona put a strong finishing touch on rookie starter Barry Enright's stellar outing.

His teammates rewarded him with a beer shower for the second consecutive game. He also got doused after earning his first win Monday night by pitching a scoreless ninth in the Diamondbacks' 7-4 victory in 10 innings.

Enright has been a bright spot for the Diamondbacks since he jumped from Double-A Mobile to the majors. He went five innings in his debut on June 30 after being recalled and beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2. He has not gone less than five innings nor allowed more than three runs in any of his eight starts.

Montero said that the Enright' success is partly due to the 24-year-old's ability to get quick outs.

"That's what he's been doing, and you can see the results," Montero said.

Enright allowed one run on three hits over six innings and retired 13 of his last 16 batters. He struck out two and walked two.

"He did his job six innings, totally controlled the game," Gibson said. "I don't know if you guys notice how good he is controlling the run game, too. It was obvious he was getting tired, but he found a way to get through it."

Brewers manager Ken Macha said that Enright's command was tremendous.

"He got strike one, and he was commanding the outside corner very well," Macha said. "After he got strike one, he didn't give you too many pitches to hit."

Arizona chased Milwaukee starter Manny Parra in sixth after Mark Reynolds singled with one out and Stephen Drew walked. Todd Coffey came on and got out of the inning without giving up a run.

Parra hasn't won since July 3 and came in 0-4 with an 8.56 ERA in his last five starts. He allowed four hits, walked six and struck out six over 5 1-3 innings as he failed to get past the sixth inning in any of his 14 starts this season.

Macha credited the Diamondback batter's for their approach against Parra.

"They weren't chasing his put away pitches," Macha said. "Part of the walks were obviously the command, but their discipline at the plate was pretty good."

Alcides Escobar hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, just over the wall and the outstretched glove of left fielder Rusty Ryal in the second.

Parra loaded the bases with on two walks sandwiched around a double by Adam LaRoche with no outs in the fourth. He escaped that jam, but Arizona nicked him for a run in the fifth.

Chris Young doubled to deep right-center field, stole third and scored on Justin Upton's sacrifice to short right-field. Right fielder Lorenzo Cain and second baseman Rickie Weeks tracked Upton's pop up down the first-base line. Weeks caught it with his back to the plate. He quickly turned and fired a one hopper to home, but Young easily beat throw.

Brewers outfielders Corey Hart (sore back) and Ryan Braun (left wrist strain) missed their second consecutive game. Both were hurt during Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. However, Hart did pinch hit in the eighth and flied out. Braun pinch ran for Casey McGehee who had doubled with two out off Demel in the ninth. Joe Inglett ground out to end the game.

Notes: Young hit his 20th home run Monday night, he became the majors' first player with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases this season. "It's a big turn around from last year for me," said Young, who hit .212 with 15 homers and 11 stolen bases in 134 games last season. He said that after being optioned to Triple-A Reno on Aug. 10, 2009 and being recalled 19 days later, he dedicated himself to improving in 2010. He had 22 stolen bases coming into Tuesday night's game. ... The Brewers televised Tuesday night's game commercial-free as part of the team's Community Foundation Week festivities. The club simultaneously ran an online auction of baseball experiences, including a clinic with pitching coach Rick Peterson and Trevor Hoffman. ... Chris Dickerson made his Milwaukee debut, starting in center field a day after being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds for Jim Edmonds.
