Upton homers off Jimenez, Arizona beats Rockies
Aug 22, 2010 - 4:01 AMVideo
But Upton got two against him Saturday night, including a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning that sent the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Rockies 3-1.
Jimenez (17-4) lost for the third time in his last six starts despite allowing only three hits in six innings. The last-place Diamondbacks sent Colorado to its third loss in a row.
Upton broke his hitless streak against Jimenez with a double in the fourth.
"He gave me two good pitches to hit," Upton said. "Every time, you're going to get electric fastball, good breaking stuff and good offspeed stuff. It's more being able to wait him out."
It was 1-all when Upton connected with two outs for his 17th home run.
Asked what pitch he hit for the homer, Upton was honest.
"I have no clue," he said. "I just saw a ball coming at me and I swung at it."
Barry Enright (4-2) continued his run of quality starts for Arizona since being called up from Double-A on June 30. He gave up one run and three hits in 6 2-3 innings, leaving him with a 2.73 ERA.
Enright has pitched at least five innings while allowing no more than three runs in all 10 of his major league starts this season. He also helped his own cause with a single before Upton homered.
"I'm trying not to think about it," Enright said of his string of solid outings, "but it's obviously an accomplishment. Trying to keep the team in the ballgame and trying to do my best."
Jordan Norberto, Esmerling Vasquez, Aaron Heilman and Juan Gutierrez finished up for Enright, shutting out the Rockies over 2 2-3 innings. Gutierrez earned his fourth save.
Jimenez, sporting the majors' best road ERA at 2.16 entering the game, lost to the Diamondbacks for the first time in four starts against them this season. He remained tied with St. Louis' Adam Wainwright for the most wins in the majors.
The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a pair of singles and Chris Iannetta's RBI grounder, but finished with only four hits for the game.
"There is no other explanation for 38-20 at home and 24-40 on the road. We just have not hit enough on the road," manager Jim Tracy said. "At times we don't even look like the same club on the road."
Jimenez blanked the Diamondbacks through the first three innings and faced the minimum nine batters.
Upton doubled off the center-field wall in the fourth. He was at third base with two outs when Jimenez uncorked a wild pitch.
"To tell you the truth, I made a lot of mistakes the whole game," Jimenez said. "They just made me pay for it those two pitches. I threw a lot of pitches that they probably could have hit out."
NOTES: The Diamondbacks signed veteran LHP Mike Hampton to a minor league contract. At 38, the two-time All-Star hasn't pitched a full season since 2004. He will report to Triple-A Reno and be used as a reliever. ... Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez was not in the starting lineup because of a bruised knee, which he hurt Wednesday in Los Angeles making a catch at the wall. Gonzalez pinch-hit in the seventh and drew a walk. He is having trouble running hard and had not appeared in a game since getting injured. ... Colorado's Aaron Cook, on the 15-day disabled list with a toe injury since Aug. 5, threw a 25-pitch simulated inning Friday in Tulsa. Cook will likely throw another simulated inning in the coming days.
