Weiland, Red Sox downed by Orioles

Jul 20, 2011 - 7:19 AM Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Kyle Weiland fared better in his second major league start. Facing Baltimore again, the 24-year-old Red Sox right-hander at least wasn't ejected this time.

But the Orioles tagged Weiland for six hits and three runs in six innings Tuesday night on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Red Sox.

Instead, Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie (4-13) had the rebound performance. He picked up his first win since June 26 after allowing two runs and eight hits in seven innings, and stopped Baltimore's seven-game losing streak to Boston.

"He threw the ball great. They pitched really good all night," said Dustin Pedroia, who beat out an infield single in the first to extend his hitting streak to a career high-tying 17 games. "They kind of just shut us down and we'll try to bounce back tomorrow."

The Red Sox lost for only the third time in 16 games. They won the opener of this three-game series 15-10 on Monday after scoring eight runs in the eighth inning and will send Andrew Miller to the mound in Wednesday's finale against Baltimore's Jake Arrieta.

Weiland (0-1) was throwing against the Orioles again after being ejected from his major league debut July 10 in Boston when he hit Vladimir Guerrero in the fifth inning. He was the first Red Sox player -- and seventh in MLB history -- to be ejected in his debut.

"I thought [tonight] was more of a look than last time. The last time was a little crazy with all the things that happened," Boston manager Terry Francona said Tuesday.

In that game, the Orioles batted around and scored six runs in the second inning. This time, they touched Weiland for two runs in the second and another in the third to build an early 3-0 lead.

"This outing was a lot different," said Weiland, who struck out two but walked three. "I had a different repertoire. I wasn't pulling my fastball like I was last time so I was able to get ahead of a few more guys."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Red Sox, but Alfredo Aceves gave up back-to-back homers to Derrek Lee and Mark Reynolds in the eighth for Baltimore's 6-2 lead.

"It was nice to give ourselves some breathing room," said Lee. "That's a tough lineup over there and a one-run lead is not a lot against them."

Jim Johnson retired six straight Red Sox batters to pick up his first save.

Pedroia singled on a slow roller to third base in the first to extend the longest active hitting streak in the American League, but was erased on a double play.

Carl Crawford, in his second game back since missing 24 with a strained hamstring, stole second base in the second inning. He got a good jump and just beat the tag with a feet-first slide for his ninth stolen base and first since June 4.

Josh Reddick had three hits to lead the Red Sox.

The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the second when Reynolds' RBI double to the wall in left field scored Adam Jones and Nolan Reimold's ground out plated Matt Wieters.

Weiland gave up another run with two outs in the third when Nick Markakis walked, went to second on Jones' single and scored when Wieters knocked a base hit past Adrian Gonzalez at first.

After Crawford's steal in the second inning, the Red Sox didn't have a baserunner get past first base until the fifth. Reddick led off with a double and scored on Saltalamacchia's eighth homer -- and second in as many nights -- which hit off the top of the wall in right field.

"We put up 15 runs last night and two tonight. That's the way it goes sometimes," said Saltalamacchia.

On Wednesday, Miller will try to rebound from his worst outing of the season, when he was roughed up for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings last Friday at Tampa Bay. Arrieta is winless in his last three starts.

David Ortiz and Orioles reliever Kevin Gregg served the second game of their reduced three-game suspensions Tuesday night for the July 8 melee...Pedroia also had a 17-game hitting streak from June 22-July 9, 2008, the year he won the AL MVP Award while batting .326 for the Sox. He has reached base in 29 straight games -- the longest current streak in the majors and matching the longest run of his career...The Red Sox are outscoring opponents 105-70 during their current 13-3 run. They are 3-2 on a six-game road trip...The Orioles are just 4-15 in their last 19 games...Guthrie didn't start, but took the loss in the July 10 game with Boston...Markakis had his 11-game hitting streak ended.
