Uggla, Braves pound Padres

Jun 26, 2011 - 5:33 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Dan Uggla had a three-run homer, drove in four runs and scored three times as the Atlanta Braves returned the favor with a 10-1 thumping of the San Diego Padres to even their three-game series.

Chipper Jones drove in a pair of runs for Atlanta, which took an 11-2 beating from San Diego in Friday's series opener, but scored seven runs in the final two innings Saturday.

Jair Jurrjens (10-3) became the third pitcher -- the first from the NL -- of the day to record his 10th win of the season. He joined the Yankees' CC Sabathia and Tigers' Justin Verlander after throwing six innings of one-run ball. The right-hander allowed just three hits, walked four and struck out two.

Alberto Gonzalez had a solo homer for the Padres, who had a three-game win streak snapped.

San Diego starter Dustin Moseley (2-7) took the loss, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings.

Atlanta scored a run in each of the first two innings to go up early. Jason Heyward doubled and scored on Jones' single in the first, while Nate McLouth doubled in Uggla in the second.

San Diego got on the board in the third, when Gonzalez homered deep to left field.

However, the Braves re-gained their two-run cushion in the sixth. Heyward ripped another double and scored three batters later, when Freddie Freeman grounded up the middle.

Meanwhile, Jurrjens bent but never broke, working out of a two-on, none-out situation three different times. The biggest jam came in the sixth, when he gave up a leadoff single to Jason Bartlett and walked Orlando Hudson.

But the crafty right-hander buckled down and got Ryan Ludwick to flyout, struck out Anthony Rizzo and forced Cameron Maybin to fly out to end the threat.

"I think I was lucky today to get away with a couple walks to leadoff men, and just (bore) down and made my pitches when I needed to make my pitches," Jurrjens said.

For San Diego, it was a case of wasted opportunities to take control.

"Couldn't get that one key knock through the early to middle parts of the game to get the momentum on our side," said Padres manager Bud Black.

Atlanta added three runs to its lead in the eighth. Uggla had an RBI single, Alex Gonzalez's sacrifice bunt scored Freeman and McLouth's ground-rule double plated Uggla for a 6-1 lead.

The Braves made it a blowout in the ninth with Jones' RBI double and Uggla's three-run blast to center.

Game Notes

Jurrjens earned his 10th win of the season in his 14th start, the first Braves pitcher to win 10 games in 14 or fewer starts since Tom Glavine in 2002. He also picked up his 10th win in his 14th start that season...The season series is knotted at 4-4. The Padres need to win Sunday's rubber match for their first season series win over the Braves since 2005, when they went 5-1 against the Braves...The Padres' 10 runs allowed were a season high in a home game and most since allowing 12 runs on 9/26/10 vs. Cincinnati.
