Jaso helps Mariners edge ChiSox in extras

Jun 3, 2012 - 1:59 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - John Jaso laced a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Mariners to a 10-8 victory over the White Sox in the second leg of a three-game set Saturday.

Jesus Montero ripped a leadoff double off of Addison Reed (0-1) to start the frame and Jaso followed two batters later with a double to the gap in right- center, scoring pinch-runner Munenori Kawasaki from second.

"There was a runner on second base so I wasn't trying to hit a home run or anything like that. I was just trying to score him," Jaso said about his at- bat.

Chone Figgins then scorched a single through the hole on the left side to plate Jaso and give the Mariners a two-run cushion.

Tom Wilhelmsen (2-1) tossed three scoreless frames in relief to record the victory while Hisashi Iwakuma blanked the Sox in the 12th to record his second save.

The Mariners, who snapped a seven-game skid against the Sox, led off the first three innings with home runs: Ichiro Suzuki in the first and third and Justin Smoak in the second. Michael Saunders also went deep in the win.

A.J. Pierzynski, Alex Rios, Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo all clubbed homers in the setback as the White Sox had their nine-game win streak halted. Rios' blast was also a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Trailing 7-5 in the eighth, Jaso worked a leadoff walk and moved to third on a single from Saunders before Brendan Ryan ripped a double down the left field line that barely stayed fair as both runners scored to knot the game at 7-7.

Ryan then swiped third and scampered home as Pierzynski's throw rolled into left field to give Seattle an 8-7 lead.

Chicago answered with the long ball in the bottom half as Viciedo launched a two-out blast over the wall in right to tie the game at 8-8.

"We battled and had a chance to win it. We just couldn't get it done. That's going to happen. You're not going to win every game," said Beckham.

Seattle took the lead early when Suzuki launched the third pitch of the game into the bullpen in right and Smoak followed suit in the second with a leadoff blast of his own to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead.

Pierzynski erased the two-run deficit in the bottom half with his ninth homer of the season, but Seattle made it three straight innings with a leadoff home run as Suzuki belted his second homer of the game to grab a 3-2 lead.

Chicago answered in the bottom half after Orlando Hudson stroked a leadoff double and scored two batters later on a single into center off the bat of Beckham.

The Mariners continued their home run barrage in the fourth when Mike Carp ripped a one-out single before Saunders crushed a fastball deep over the wall in right-center field, providing the visitors with a 5-3 edge.

Rios made it a one-run game with a leadoff blast in the fourth before the White Sox jumped in front in the fifth.

Alejandro De Aza reached on a one-out single and Beckham followed with a shot over the left field wall, propelling the Sox to a 6-5 lead.

Chicago tacked on a two-out run in the seventh after De Aza singled to right and quickly swiped second. Beckham then slapped a single up the middle that was snared by Ryan at shortstop, but his throw pulled Smoak off the bag at first and De Aza never stopped running from second, sliding home to give Chicago a 7-5 lead.
