Cloyd picks up 1st win as Phillies double up Reds

Sep 3, 2012 - 11:06 PM Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Tyler Cloyd allowed just one run over seven strong innings to guide the Philadelphia Phillies past the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.

Cloyd (1-1), who lost his MLB debut Aug. 29, scattered four hits and struck out nine without issuing a walk to pick up his career win.

"I kept the ball down and felt a little bit more relaxed," Cloyd said. "My two-seam fastball and change up were working really well for me today. That helped me out a lot."

Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer and John Mayberry added a solo shot for the Phillies, who have won four of their last five.

Johnny Cueto (17-7) yielded four runs on eight hits and struck out five in just his second loss at home this season.

Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI and Ryan Ludwick had two hits and scored a run for the Reds, who lost for just the second time in seven tries.

"Well, some one has to get hot, hopefully in the middle of the order," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Jay has been swinging the bat great, and our other guys will come around."

Bruce put the Reds on the board with his homer in the second inning, his 30th of the season.

Rollins crushed a three-run homer in the fifth to put the Phillies up 3-1. Steven Lerud and Cloyd both singled before Rollins smacked his 17th homer of the season over the wall in right-center.

The visitors extended their lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Mayberry ripped a solo shot to left.

Cincinnati added a run in the ninth when Bruce singled to right-center, but it wouldn't be enough as Phillippe Aumont got Todd Frazier to ground out to end the game. It was Aumont's first career save.

"We were threatening at the end there," Baker said. "We had some action today, not a whole lot. We will just have to come back tomorrow."
