Dodgers edge Phillies
Jun 6, 2012 - 3:03 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee can't buy a win.Despite carrying a shutout into the eighth inning, Lee suffered another loss as Elian Herrera's two-run double lifted the Dodgers to a 2-1 win over the Phillies on Tuesday.
Lee (0-3) won 17 games last season, but he is now winless through his first nine starts of the season despite a 2.92 earned run average. He struck out a season-high 12 batters on Tuesday and gave up six hits and a walk in the loss.
Chad Billingsley (3-4) pitched even better than Lee as he gave up just one run on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts over seven innings to grab his first win since April 11. He was 0-4 in his previous nine starts.
"When Cliff Lee throws a game like that, your guy's gotta throw with him," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "Chad Billingsley gave us a chance."
The Dodgers have taken the first two games of the four-game set after dropping six of their previous seven, while the Phillies have lost four straight.
Matt Treanor led off the eighth with a double to left-center and Tony Gwynn tried to bunt Treanor over to third, but his attempt went back to the mound and Lee threw the ball to third for the tag out. Bobby Abreu then singled to right, but Hunter Pence threw a strike to third and Gwynn was nailed for the second out of the inning.
However, the Dodgers then got a single from Dee Gordon and Herrera followed with a double off the wall in left to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.
"He (Herrera) had a really good at-bat," said Lee. "He fouled off a lot of pitches. That last pitch was a hanging curveball. That was the ballgame. Other than that last pitch, I felt like my stuff was as good as I've had all year."
Josh Lindblom worked a perfect eighth while Kenley Jansen pitched around a one-out single by Ty Wigginton in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.
The Phils worked a run across in the first inning as Jimmy Rollins led off with a double and came home two batters later on a Pence single to right.
The Dodgers put men on first and second with one out in the second, but Lee struck out Treanor and got Gwynn to fly out to center to end the frame.
Lee then retired the next eight batters before Gwynn singled with two outs in the fifth. He struck out Billingsley to end the inning then struck out the side in the sixth.
The Phillies didn't get a runner past second base for the remainder of the game.
