Solid Hamels helps Phils take series from Padres
May 13, 2012 - 10:49 PMVideo
Hamels (5-1) allowed one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts, lowering his earned run average to 2.28, and Jimmy Rollins hit a solo home run for Philadelphia.
"He's doing good. They worked him pretty good," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of his ace.
Jonathan Papelbon struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his 10th save in as many opportunities.
Jeff Suppan (2-1) was the tough-luck loser for San Diego, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on six hits without a walk over six frames. Jesus Guzman had an RBI and a run scored in the setback.
"Jeff pitched well. Six solid innings...like we talk about, he did his job. We just didn't generate enough offense against the Phillies," said Padres manager Bud Black.
Rollins' first homer of the season led off the first inning, when he took Suppan's offering over the fence in right field. It extended Rollins' franchise-record number of leadoff home runs to 38.
Philadelphia added one in the home second on Brian Schneider's two-out run- scoring single but Jesus Guzman got the run back a half-inning later with an RBI groundout.
Juan Pierre doubled home Brian Schneider in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1.
San Diego again pulled within one in the eighth, when Guzman doubled off Jose Contreras, stole third and scored on Nick Hundley's groundout.
But Antonio Bastardo spelled Contreras and got Andy Parrino to pop out, and Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth to seal the series win.
Game Notes
