Mariners defeat Yanks to take series rubber match
May 17, 2013 - 5:45 AM Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Michael Morse clubbed a solo homer to help lift the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in the rubber match of a three-game set.Dustin Ackley and Brendan Ryan knocked in the other runs for the Mariners, who, after dropping the opener, won the final two games to claim their first series against the Yankees in New York since June 29-July 1, 2010.
"Out of the gates we were kind of stumbling, but now we're going through a cycle of good fortune," said Ryan. "We've got a bunch of guys putting in hard work and it's been fun."
Former Yankee Hector Noesi made a spot start for Seattle, replacing Aaron Harang after he was scratched with lower back stiffness. Noesi allowed an unearned run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Curtis Granderson finished 3-for-4 and scored a run for New York, which saw Andy Pettitte (4-3) depart after 4 2/3 innings due to a tight left trapezius muscle. The veteran left-hander, making his 499th career start, gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five.
"It's been a battle my last four starts," said Pettitte. "My command just isn't what I want it to be."
Pettitte was relieved by Shawn Kelley, who surrendered Morse's 10th home run of the season in the sixth. The leadoff blast to center field put Seattle up 3-1.
The Yankees got a run back in the seventh after their first two batters reached against Yoervis Medina. Ichiro Suzuki snapped an 0-for-22 drought at the plate with a leadoff single and Chris Stewart worked a walk.
Later in the inning, New York had runners on second and third with two outs when Robinson Cano reached on an infield single off Lucas Luetge. Cano hit a chopper to short, but Ryan's throw pulled Kendrys Morales off the bag at first.
Carter Capps shut down the threat by retiring Vernon Wells on an infield pop up.
After stranding a runner on second in the eighth, New York looked to mount a rally against Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen. Brett Gardner hit a one-out single in the ninth and swiped two bases before Jayson Nix went down swinging. Wilhelmsen escaped the jam and notched his 11th save of the year by retiring Cano on a grounder to short.
Ackley and New York's David Adams traded two-out RBI doubles in the second inning.
The Mariners produced only one run after loading the bases in the fourth, with Morse scoring on a Ryan infield single.
New York put men on the corners in the fifth, but Oliver Perez (1-0) fanned Gardner and got Nix on an pop up to second.
