Colon, A's blank White Sox
Jun 1, 2013 - 6:25 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Bartolo Colon tossed his second shutout of the season to help the Oakland Athletics take a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game series.Colon (6-2) scattered five hits, all singles, and struck out three without issuing a walk in posting the 11th shutout of his career. It was also his second complete game of the season and 34th of his career.
Josh Reddick, who came off the disabled list on Friday, hit an RBI double in the eighth inning and Coco Crisp added a two-run single later in the frame for the Athletics, who have won seven of their last eight.
"It felt great. These guys have been playing great without me," Reddick said of his return.
Dylan Axelrod (3-4) tossed seven-plus strong innings as he gave up just two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts for the White Sox, who have dropped four straight.
"It stinks, it needs to get better," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of his team's offense that has scored six runs over the past four games.
The first time a runner made it to second in this contest was when John Jaso smacked an opposite-field double to left that one-hopped its way to the wall to start the eighth inning. Reddick followed with a double to right for the first run of the game.
Matt Thornton then took over on the mound and walked Brandon Moss before Jesse Crain entered the game. A sacrifice bunt from Adam Rosales moved both runners into scoring position, and Crisp punched a single to center for a 3-0 lead.
Colon finished off his 106-pitch game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, ending the game by getting Alex Rios to fly out.
Alejandro De Aza led off the game with a single, but Colon got Alexei Ramirez to hit into a double play then forced a Rios fly out to end the frame.
From there, he scattered singles in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings while keeping the White Sox from getting a runner into scoring position the entire game.
