Danks solid on mound, White Sox use late push to beat A's
Jun 9, 2013 - 1:04 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko each homered to back a solid outing from John Danks, as the Chicago White Sox posted a 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics at U.S. Cellular Field.Danks (1-2) limited the Athletics to a run on three hits over eight innings. Addison Reed pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his 18th save and secure just the second win in Chicago's last 12 games.
"This is more indicative of what you want to see," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said of Danks. "He's a competitor always, but with the ability to throw and have location and keep guys off balance and have a feel for the game."
The White Sox scored three times in the eighth inning and went ahead on an Alex Rios single.
Oakland starter Tommy Milone didn't get a decision after giving up one run on four hits in seven frames.
Josh Donaldson hit an RBI single in the first inning for the Athletics, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in six tilts against the White Sox this season.
Dunn tied the game with a leadoff blast to center in the second.
The score remained the same until Chicago broke through against the Oakland bullpen.
Alejandro De Aza reached on an infield single to begin the eighth against Sean Doolittle (3-1). Two batters later, Rios plated De Aza with a base hit to right and scored on Konerko's blast to left.
"The ball Konerko hit was pretty much off his shoe tops," Doolittle said, "so it's kind of just like, today they just beat me and I have got to just tip my cap to them and take it."
Game Notes
Danks improved to 6-1 in nine career starts against Oakland. He has allowed only 15 earned runs in those outings ... The Athletics lost for just the fourth time in their last 22 games ... Milone struck out seven batters, one more than Danks ... Coco Crisp had two of Oakland's four hits.
