Hosmer's HR lifts Royals over Tribe in early-morning win
Jul 4, 2013 - 6:30 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Eric Hosmer's tie-breaking home run in the seventh inning helped the Kansas City Royals take a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Indians in a game that didn't end until after 1 a.m. local time.Miguel Tejada and Salvador Perez each had two hits and an RBI for the Royals, who had dropped the opener of this series by a 6-5 score.
Jeremy Guthrie pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Will Smith (1-1) tossed 1 2/3 frames to get the win.
The start of this game was delayed for 2 hours, 37 minutes due to rain, and there was another delay of 12 minutes with one out in the seventh as several banks of lights in the stadium went out.
Jason Kipnis went 2-for-4 with a three-run inside-the-park home run for the Indians, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Scott Kazmir went five-plus innings in the start and gave up three runs on six hits. Cody Allen (3-1) was tagged with the loss for giving up Hosmer's home run.
"We made some mistakes tonight and we tried to battle back through them, but came up one run short," Indians manager Terry Francona said.
With the scored tied at 5-5 with two outs in the seventh, Hosmer lofted a pitch over the center field wall for his eighth homer of the season.
Smith set the Indians down in order in the eighth inning while Greg Holland kept the Indians off the board in the ninth for his 18th save of the season.
The Royals took the initial lead in the game as Alex Gordon led off the game with a double and later scored on a Billy Butler single in the first inning.
Cleveland stranded a runner at third in the second inning, and didn't threaten again until the sixth when the team took the lead.
Michael Bourn led off with a single and Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a base hit. Kipnis then lofted a fly ball to deep left field that Gordon tried to track down, but as he approached the wall he turned his back to the fence, landing awkwardly and hitting his head and back against the fence. The ball fell and Kipnis raced home for the inside-the-park home run and a 3-1 lead.
Gordon had to exit the game after being attended to by trainers, but he did walk into the clubhouse under his own power.
"He's fine. He's got a hip contusion and symptoms of a slight concussion," said Kansas City manager Ned Yost. "We'll monitor him day-to-day."
In the bottom of the sixth, the Royals went back on top on three straight run- scoring singles by Perez, Lorenzo Cain and Tejada, and an errant pickoff throw from Bryan Shaw that plated another run for a 5-3 lead.
Cleveland, though, answered in the seventh as a Bourn RBI single was followed by a sacrifice fly from Cabrera to tie the game.
