Surging Indians top White Sox on Santana's HR
Aug 1, 2013 - 4:19 AM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Carlos Santana's solo home run in the 10th inning lifted the Cleveland Indians past the Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in the third contest of a four-game series from Progressive Field.Santana led off the bottom of the 10th by blasting a full-count fastball from Dylan Axelrod (3-7) into the right-field seats for the Indians' ninth walk-off win of the year.
"I was looking for a fastball," Santana said. "I just made good contact."
Chris Perez (4-1) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th to earn the victory for the Indians, winners of a season-high seven straight games.
Jason Kipnis and Santana each drove in two runs while Michael Brantley and Michael Bourn each added an RBI for Cleveland, which has won seven consecutive meetings against the White Sox as well.
Jeff Keppinger drove in two runs while Alexei Ramirez, Alex Rios and Adam Dunn added an RBI each for the White Sox, who have dropped six in a row.
Chicago broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning. Conor Gillaspie's two-out base hit chased starter Corey Kluber from the mound. Dayan Viciedo greeted Cody Allen with a single to center to put runners on the corners. After a Gordon Beckham walk loaded the bases, Keppinger stepped in as a pinch-hitter and knocked a two-out, full-count fastball into center to make it 5-3 White Sox.
Addison Reed ran into a whole lot of trouble in the bottom of the ninth.
"Tonight is 100-percent my fault," Reed said. "It's something new every night."
He surrendered a double to Brantley and plunked Jason Giambi in the elbow to start the frame. Drew Stubbs beat out a bunt to load the bases with no outs. Bourn and Kipnis connected on sac fly's to tie the game. Reed struck out Asdrubal Cabrera with the winning run at third to send the game into extras.
The Indians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. Bourn slapped a double to the left-center field gap, Nick Swisher singled to put runners on the corners and Kipnis plated Bourn on a groundout to second.
Brantley connected on a full-count fastball that rolled to the left-center field warning track for an RBI double in the fourth. Mike Aviles, who reached on a single, scored to double the lead.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth, Santana doubled on a line drive to left to make it 3-0 Indians.
The White Sox tied the game in the sixth inning. Josh Phegley led off with a single and crossed the plate on a Ramirez double to left. Back-to-back RBI base hits up the middle from Rios and Dunn knotted the game at 3-3.
Game Notes
Prior to the game, the Indians optioned pitcher Vinnie Pestano to Triple-A Columbus, while Chicago recalled outfielder Jordan Danks from Triple-A Charlotte ... White Sox starter Jose Quintana was charged for three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings, while Kluber yielded four runs on eight hits over a career-high 8 2/3 frames ... Quintana leads the majors with 14 no-decisions ... The White Sox are 18-37 on the road ... Cleveland is 7-1 in extra inning games, while Chicago is 5-11 ... Cleveland has won a season- high 10 straight games at home.
