Pirates earn rare series win in Philadelphia

Apr 25, 2013 - 10:19 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Garrett Jones' go-ahead two-run double was part of a three-run eighth inning that lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a four-game set.

Gaby Sanchez smacked a solo homer among his two hits and three RBI for Pittsburgh, which has won six of its last seven.

"Everybody knows their role," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Even if they don't start, they stay prepared and ready to go."

Justin Wilson (2-0) allowed an inherited runner to score, but struck out two and didn't surrender a hit or walk over two innings to pick up the win.

Ryan Howard tallied two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Domonic Brown added a pair of doubles and two RBI for the Phillies, who dropped the last three games of the series and went 3-5 on their homestand.

After Phillippe Aumont (1-3) struck out pinch-hitter Neil Walker to start the eighth, he hit Clint Barmes before allowing back-to-back singles to Travis Snider and Starling Marte to load the bases with one away.

The pinch-hitter Jones then scalded a 3-1 fastball over the heart of the plate off the base of the wall in right to plate Barmes and Snider. Chad Durbin took over on the hill and intentionally walked Andrew McCutchen. Marte scampered home when Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly to right, which gave the Pirates a 6-3 advantage.

"Today we had a one-run lead. (Then), Gaby Sanchez hits the home run," Phillies starter Cliff Lee said. "We regain the lead, then they caught us back up. That's where I got to do a better job."

Howard had an RBI ground out in the home half, and Tony Watson worked around a Brown leadoff double in the ninth to earn a two-inning save, his first of the season.

Philly opened the scoring in the fourth on Brown's RBI bloop double to center, but the Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth when Sanchez led off the frame and belted a homer into the seats in left-center.

Philadelphia plated two in the sixth before the Buccos answered with two in the seventh to knot the contest again.

Howard ripped an RBI single to right and Brown lined a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth, while RBI base hits by Sanchez and Michael McKenry in the seventh squared things up at 3-3.
