Wood hits grand slam, throws 6 innings in Cubs' win
May 31, 2013 - 12:25 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Travis Wood's first career grand slam and a quality start were the difference as the Chicago Cubs thumped the Chicago White Sox, 8-3, to earn a sweep in the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field. It was the first grand slam for the Cubs this season and the first by a Cubs pitcher since Jason Marquis did it in 2008.
Wood (5-3) bounced back from his worst outing of the year, going six frames and yielding two runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Luis Valbuena went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a solo homer, while Nate Schierholtz also homered to help the Cubs to their season-high fourth straight victory.
Paul Konerko finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for the White Sox, while Alejandro De Aza knocked in the other run.
Jake Peavy (6-3) made his shortest start of the season by going just four innings while surrendering six runs on eight hits. This came after a one-run, complete-game performance against the Marlins.
The grand slam came in the fourth inning when the first three batters were almost welcomed on base.
"I was a little excited," Wood said about the grand slam. "We were only up two and I was fortunate enough to put a good swing on the ball and then we were up six."
Welington Castillo hit a routine pop up that dropped between third and the pitcher's mound for a single. A Valbuena base hit followed and Darwin Barney was beamed by Jake Peavy to load the bases for Wood, who smacked a blast into the first row of seats in left-center to give the Cubs a 6-1 lead.
Schierholtz and Valbuena added solo shots in the fifth and eigth, respectively.
Cubs reliever Kevin Gregg's scoreless streak came to an end at 14 innings with a De Aza RBI single in the ninth, which accounted for the final margin.
The Cubs started off the scoring with a two-out rally in the second with a Valbuena double to center. Barney followed that up with an RBI single to center. After a Wood single, David DeJesus scored Barney from second with a base hit, making it 2-0.
De Aza walked and Alexei Ramirez singled to begin the third inning. With a runner on third and two outs, Konerko knocked in his first run of the game to cut the lead to one.
"We just got beat in all aspects of the game," said Konerko. "They were the better team in every area of the game."
