Phillies stay hot, defeat Brewers

Jun 7, 2013 - 4:02 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Tyler Cloyd worked 6 2/3 shutout innings to help the Philadelphia Phillies down the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-1, in the opener of a four-game set at Miller Park.

Cloyd (2-2) gave up four hits and five walks while striking out two to earn the win.

"Cloyd was very good. When he does that we have a real good chance of winning," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Delmon Young hit a solo homer, John Mayberry went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Ryan Howard drove in a run to help push the Phillies (31-30) over .500 for the first time all season and extend a season-best five-game winning streak.

Jonathan Lucroy drove in the lone run for the Brewers, losers in four of their last five games.

Wily Peralta (4-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings.

"They got a couple of ground ball base hits and his command was off," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Peralta. "He didn't have his slider today and was more inconsistent than I though he would be."

Philadelphia plated a pair of runs in the first before adding one in both the second and third innings to go up 4-0.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the first, Howard lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Michael Young. After Domonic Brown walked to load the bases once again, Peralta bounced a wild pitch past Lucroy, allowing Mayberry to cross the plate.

In the second, Cloyd walked then scored from first as Mayberry smoked a double to right-center field.

Brown scored on an Erik Kratz fielder's choice in the third to give the Phillies a four-run edge.

Delmon Young's homer in the fifth made it 5-0.

"We got some runners on and we were fortunate to get some runs early, and then add on," Manuel said. "We got a real good start out of the gate tonight. That always helps."

The Brewers finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Ryan Braun worked a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on Aramis Ramirez's groundout. Lucroy followed with a groundout to third, but Braun was able to score on the play to account for the Brewers only run.

Game Notes

Brown stole two bases ... Milwaukee has been held to three or fewer runs 26 times this season ... Peralta has dropped five of his last six starts.
