Turner spins a gem as Marlins down Padres

Jun 30, 2013 - 6:06 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Jacob Turner tossed his first career complete game, and Jeff Mathis contributed a two-run single, as Miami dumped San Diego, 7-1, in the second installment of a four-game series.

Turner (2-0) scattered seven hits and one run, fanning seven and issuing only one walk to post his first victory in almost one month. The 22-year-old right- hander lowered his earned run average to 1.76 with the effort.

"I like to think it was just like any other game, but obviously, it was nice to pitch the whole game," Turner said. "At the same time, you have to go out there for your next start, throw strikes and let your defense do the work for you."

Giancarlo Stanton homered, with Marcell Ozuna, Placido Polanco and Adeiny Hechevarria contributing an RBI apiece for the Marlins, who have taken six of their last eight games.

Nick Hundley collected two hits, including a run-scoring double for the Padres, losers in five of their last seven.

Eric Stults (6-6) didn't make it beyond the fourth inning, departing after giving up seven hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 3 2/3 frames.

"It definitely wasn't the way I wanted it to go," Stults admitted. "I struggled with command of a lot of my pitches."

Stanton's one-out solo homer in the seventh was the last of the Miami offense, but Turner held strong.

He stranded a runner on second in the eighth, then was able to emerge unscathed after walking Carlos Quentin to lead off the ninth -- retiring the next three batters in succession.

The Marlins punctured Stults for three runs in the bottom of the first on a hit from Ozuna and a Polanco sac fly. Justin Ruggiano and Ed Lucas hit consecutive singles to start the frame, before Ozuna's single plus an error from Padres center fielder Alexi Amarista allowed two to cross the plate.

It was 6-0 for the hosts in the fourth, as Hechevarria drove in Polanco with a base hit and Mathis added a two-run single. Turner sacrificed Mathis to second and two batters later a walk to Lucas clinched Stults' exit from the contest. Tim Stauffer got Stanton on a pop out to prevent further damage.

San Diego hit the scoreboard in the fifth as Will Venable tripled to open and came in when Hundley followed with a double. Hundley was snagged at third, and the Padres' bats were silent from that point.
