Cardinals reach double digits in rout of Phillies
Jul 25, 2013 - 5:23 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Shane Robinson and Matt Adams each drove in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle tilt of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.Yadier Molina, David Freese, Matt Carpenter, Brock Peterson and Pete Kozma all contributed with an RBI. Five different players had multi-hit efforts for the Cardinals, winners of five of their last six.
Jake Westbrook (7-4) recorded his fourth straight quality start, pitching seven solid innings. He was charged with nine hits and three runs, fanning two without issuing a walk.
"We just worry about the things we control. We just have to go out there and win some ball games. That is what we're focused on right now," Westbrook said.
John Lannan (2-4) was tagged for four runs on eight hits with two walks in four full frames. Coming into the game he held the Cardinals to two runs or fewer in seven previous starts against them.
"There are going to be games like this where i give up hits. I just have to try and limit the damage. I didn't do that tonight," Lannan said.
Carlos Ruiz, John Mayberry and Michael Martinez each drove in a run for the Phillies, who have scored just eight runs during their four-game losing skid.
Already leading by three, the Cardinals opened up the game in the fifth. Craig, Freese and Adams all doubled, respectively, to center off J.C. Ramirez, with the latter two driving in a run each to boost the hosts to a 6-1 edge. Following two walks, Robinson capped off the five run inning with a bases- clearing triple.
In the seventh, Mayberry doubled in Laynce Nix and two batters later he crossed home on a Martinez two-out base hit up the middle to make it a six-run game.
With two men on in the eighth, Peterson recorded his first major-league hit and RBI with a pinch-single off Chase Utley's glove. Kozma followed with an RBI line drive to make it 11-3 Cardinals.
The scoring started in the second when back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Cards. Adams chopped a ball through the right side of the infield to plate two. Kozma then lifted a fly to right, but Delmon Young's throw was in time to get Freese at the plate.
After Philadelphia failed to score with a runner on third and one out in the third, St. Louis capitalized with two outs in the home half when Molina singled home Carpenter.
Lannan issued a two-out walk in the fourth to Westbrook, who then stole his second career base. Carpenter delivered a single up the middle to give the Cardinals a 4-0 cushion.
The Phillies got on the board in the fifth when Ruiz singled to right to score Darin Ruf from second.
