Ninth inning HRs by Dominguez, Carter lift Astros over ChiSox
Aug 27, 2013 - 5:21 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros recovered after blowing a five-run lead, with Matt Dominguez and Chris Carter hitting back-to-back homers with two outs in the ninth inning to salvage a 10-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox.The duo crossed the plate three times each, with Carter homering twice and knocking in four during a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
Jordan Lyles came into a bases loaded situation during the last half of the ninth. He fell behind 3-0 to Avisail Garcia, but fired three straight strikes and got him looking to secure his first career save.
"Jordan Lyles coming in at the end with the big strikeout was absolutely huge," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "I'm so glad we had him available today."
David Martinez (1-0) relieved Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer and gave up three runs during Chicago's five-run fifth, but picked up the win with scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth.
Addison Reed (5-2) was hit with the loss. He got the first two outs in the top of the ninth before giving up both homers. Alejandro De Aza went 4-for-5 with an RBI in the setback for the White Sox, who won eight of nine coming in.
"Anytime I go out there, I'm obviously trying to go 1-2-3," said Reed. "Today it just didn't work out. I felt awesome out there, I felt great, felt like I had everything working and then made a couple bad pitches. Hung a slider to Dominguez and he made me pay for it."
Houston took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth on Carter's two-run homer, but the White Sox scored seven runs over their ensuing two turns at the plate to take the lead.
They plated two in the home fifth, with Jeff Keppinger hitting a solo homer and another run coming in when Houston's L.J. Hoes committed a two-out fielding error on Gordon Beckham's fly into right.
Adam Dunn smacked a two-run homer in the sixth and Oberholtzer's outing ended with one out in the frame. Martinez came on and the White Sox greeted him with four straight hits, with Josh Phegley driving in a run, another coming home on a balk and De Aza scorching a base hit to center for an 8-7 Chicago lead.
The Astros had scored their seventh run on a wild pitch in the top sixth, then tied it back up in their next turn, with Carter unloading a two-out base hit to center to score Dominguez from second.
Jason Castro's 18th homer, a solo shot, got Houston on the board first in the second. They plated two more in the inning when Brandon Barnes' single went underneath the glove of Garcia in right.
Chicago brought in a run on Gordon Beckham's double-play grounder in the third, but Houston went up 4-1 the next half frame on Brett Wallace's solo homer.
