Cubs rally past White Sox in makeup game
Jul 9, 2013 - 6:07 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Luis Valbuena hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and finished the game with three RBI to help the Chicago Cubs take an 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday.Alfonso Soriano went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and four runs scored, Cody Ransom drove in a pair, and Dave Sappelt was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored for the Cubs, who have won three straight.
Matt Garza (5-1) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts over seven innings to win his fourth straight decision.
"I think I'm picking up where I left off last year, doing the things that I did well towards the end there," said Garza. "I look forward to every five days now when I can get out there."
Josh Phegley hit a solo home run, while Gordon Beckham scored a run for the White Sox, who have dropped their past four games. Hector Santiago gave up two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings, but didn't factor into the decision.
"You just try to go out there and put up zeros. Just give us a chance to win," Santiago said.
This contest was a makeup game from a May 28 rainout.
The score was tied in the eighth inning when the Cubs went on top in a big way.
Matt Thornton (0-3) was on the mound to start and gave up a one-out walk to Soriano followed by a single from Dioner Navarro. Valbuena then roped a double to center and both runners came home.
Nate Jones took over on the hill and got Darwin Barney to ground out back to the mound, but Sappelt then punched a single to center. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Ransom slapped a single to center for a 7-2 lead.
Blake Parker set the White Sox down in order in the eighth, while Sappelt added another run in the ninth with an RBI single for a 8-2 advantage.
Parker got the first out of the ninth before James Russell retired the next two batters to end the game.
Valbuena's sacrifice fly in the second was countered by Phegley's one-out homer in the third.
Soriano led off the sixth by crushing a 1-0 pitch deep into the left-field stands for his 13th home run of the year and a 2-1 lead, but in the bottom of the inning, Alex Rios stole second with Beckham on third, and Beckham took home on the throw to second.
