Cubs, White Sox play makeup game at U.S. Cellular Field
Jul 8, 2013 - 2:42 PM (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs will visit the south side of the city when they take on the White Sox Monday in a makeup game from a May 28 rainout. The Cubs have won all three of their matchups with the White Sox this season, winning one at U.S. Cellular Field and two at Wrigley Field. After the Cubs visit their crosstown rivals, they will return home for six games versus the LA Angels and St. Louis Cardinals.
In a weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cubs took the last two portions of the set and recorded a 4-3 win in 11 innings on Sunday. Pinch- hitter Dioner Navarro plated Anthony Rizzo on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning for the game-winning run and Scott Hairston homered.
"It was nice beating the best team in baseball, basically," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "Had some timely hits, caught the ball and did a good job."
Carlos Villanueva got the start for the Cubs and held the Pirates to a run and three hits in four innings. Matt Guerrier was the sixth reliever used and pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
The Cubs have won seven of their last 11 games and will send Matt Garza to the mound Monday. Garza has won three straight starts and tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Oakland, improving to 4-1 in nine starts with a 3.45 earned run average.
Garza, who is 2-0 in six road starts, has allowed only three runs over his previous four starts and has faced the White Sox seven times in his career. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA in this series.
The White Sox suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend and dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday.
Josh Phegley homered and Gordon Beckham recorded a pair of hits, while John Danks posted the win with seven decent innings. Danks gave up three runs, struck out five and walked two batters to push his mark to 2-6. Danks, though, couldn't outduel Rays lefty David Price, who went the distance.
"I feel good about getting us deep in the game and keeping us in the ballgame, but I simply got outpitched by David," Danks admitted.
The White Sox have lost nine of their last 11 games and will start a six-game road trip against Detroit and Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Taking the mound for the Pale Hose Monday will be Hector Santiago. Santiago is 3-5 with a 3.50 earned run average in 21 games (10 starts) and previously toed the rubber in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Baltimore. He was reached for two runs in seven innings and struck out nine with a pair of walks.
Santiago, a left-hander, will make his first career start against the Cubs and has a 3.60 ERA in three relief appearances in this series.
