McCarthy shines as D-backs top Padres

May 4, 2014 - 6:48 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon McCarthy allowed no runs over seven innings of work and the Arizona Diamondbacks took a 4-3 decision over the San Diego Padres in the middle test of a three-game set.

McCarthy (1-5) struck out six and surrendered three hits in the outing to earn his first win of the season. Although Addison Reed allowed two runs in the ninth, he recorded two outs to earn his eighth save of the season.

"The story of the night was McCarthy's performance," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "Seven great innings for us of shutout ball. He's throwing the ball very well and that set the tone for us."

Miguel Montero had three hits and blasted his fourth homer of the season, while Chris Owings also notched three hits and Alfredo Marte had two RBI in Arizona's third straight win.

Ian Kennedy (2-4) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts over five innings of work.

Jedd Gyorko poked a two-run homer and Yasmani Grandal added an RBI for San Diego, which dropped its fourth straight contest.

"It's a long season," said Padres manager Bud Black. "This game is built on peaks and valleys. We're in a little bit of a valley offensively, to say the least."

Montero led off the second inning with a homer to right-center. Owings doubled two batters later and Marte followed with an RBI double that gave the D-backs a 2-0 lead after two.

With men on first and second and one out in the fifth, Owings slapped a single to left that scored Montero. Marte added an RBI single in the seventh that staked the visitors to a 4-0 lead before the result came into question in the ninth.

The Padres were shutout in two of their previous three games and came within three outs of making it two straight and three of four without a run, but made a game of it in the final frame.

Following a groundout from Chris Denorfia, Seth Smith reached on an infield single and Grandal smashed a doubled to center that scored Smith and ended a 17-inning scoreless drought.

Reed entered in relief of J.J. Putz and Gyorko immediately greeted him with a two-run shot to left-center that cut the deficit to 4-3.

Yonder Alonso grounded out to first for the second out in the inning, but Cameron Maybin doubled to left to put the tying run in scoring position. Pinch-hitter Will Venable walked before Xavier Nady flied out to right to end the game.

Game Notes

Arizona pounded out 14 hits ... Smith had three hits in the setback ... The D- backs were 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position ... San Diego was 1- for-10 with RISP.
