Cueto pitches Reds past Diamondbacks
Jun 1, 2014 - 6:39 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Johnny Cueto pitched into the eighth inning as the Cincinnati Reds grabbed a 5-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third game of a four-game set.Cueto (5-4) gave up five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts for the Reds, who have won three of their past four. Brandon Phillips drove in two and scored once, while Skip Schumaker had an RBI and scored twice.
"Another excellent performance," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Cueto. "(It) was certainly needed because we are trying to put some wins together."
Brandon McCarthy (1-7) was touched for five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped their past two games.
The Diamondbacks lost center fielder A.J. Pollock, who was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning and suffered a fractured right hand.
"It's fractured so we're waiting on some more tests and stuff and see what we're going to do," said Pollock. "Just have to wait and see what's going on."
The fourth inning saw the Reds go on top as their first three batters hit singles, with Phillips' base hit scoring Billy Hamilton. Two batters later, Todd Frazier singled in Schumaker and Brayan Pena followed with an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Hamilton led off with a bunt single, stole second and came home on a Schumaker single. Phillips followed with a double to center for a 5-0 lead.
Arizona left men on second and third in the first, then stranded another man on third in the sixth.
In the eighth, the Diamondbacks loaded the bases with one out, but Jonathan Broxton took over and struck out Paul Goldschmidt before getting Miguel Montero to pop out and end the inning.
J.J. Hoover worked around a walk in the ninth to close out the win.
Game Notes
The Reds have won six of the last eight games against the Diamondbacks ... Arizona went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
