Diamondbacks avoid sweep in LA
Jun 16, 2014 - 4:04 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Montero belted a two-run homer and Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo shot as the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a three-game sweep at Chavez Ravine with a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.Bronson Arroyo (7-4) tossed five innings of one-run ball, and four Arizona relievers combined to limit the Dodgers to two runs the rest of the way.
"It was nice to get out of (Los Angeles) with at least one win," Arroyo said.
Josh Beckett (4-4) lasted seven frames and was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on five hits to take the loss, only the club's fourth in 14 meetings against its NL West rival.
Beckett's undoing came in the seventh when the Dodgers made several mistakes behind him, costing them two runs.
A miscommunication on who was covering first led to Montero's infield hit. Montero then tested Matt Kemp's arm and beat the left-fielder's throw to third on Aaron Hill's base hit, putting runners on the corners with one away.
Beckett nearly got out of the jam by inducing a weak ground ball off the bat of Martin Prado, but the ball snuck under Dee Gordon's glove and rolled to the outfield as Montero and Hill scored on the error.
"We gave some outs away," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "It's a tough (loss)."
An error and walk to start the home half of the seventh gave LA life, and Justin Turner's pinch-hit, RBI double off the wall in left cut into the deficit. Drew Butera, however, was thrown out at third on the play, and Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig were both retired by Evan Marshall to end the threat.
Montero extended the margin with a two-run homer off Chris Perez in the ninth, and even though Ramirez doubled in a run in the home half, Addison Reed preserved the win by getting Puig on a routine pop fly to right.
Beckett hung a 2-2 breaking ball to Goldschmidt that was redirected into the left-field bleachers in the first inning.
The Dodgers got the run back on Jamie Romak's RBI groundout in the second, but Beckett's wild pitch in the fifth allowed David Peralta to score the go-ahead run. Peralta doubled with two outs and stole third prior to the errant pitch.
