Collmenter stymies Padres; D-backs end skid
Aug 23, 2014 - 4:57 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Collmenter carried a shutout into the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game series.Collmenter (9-7) had pitched to an 8.50 ERA over his previous four outings but was masterful on Friday, holding the Padres to a measly two hits over the first eight innings.
"I was able to locate...and keep the ball down in the zone," Collmenter said.
He was pulled with one out in the ninth after giving up two more hits, and a wild pitch by Matt Stites allowed San Diego's only run to score.
Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer while Jake Lamb scored a run and knocked in another to back Collmenter's strong effort.
Odrisamer Despaigne (3-5) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over as many innings for San Diego, which had dropped six of eight overall.
David Peralta began a two-out rally in the first inning with a triple and scored when Mark Trumbo legged out an infield single in the hole between short and third.
Montero then rung one off the right-field foul pole for his 13th home run of the season, and Arizona made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the second. With a runner on third and two outs, Ender Inciarte bounced one toward second baseman Jedd Gyorko, whose error allowed Lamb to score.
Lamb added a run-scoring fielder's choice in the eighth.
The Diamondbacks played terrific defense behind Collmenter, who retired 15 straight after Peralta ended the third inning by throwing out Alexi Amarista from right field trying to go from first to third.
"The story was (Collmenter). We couldn't solve him," Padres manager Bud Black said.
