Padres top D-backs on Spangenberg HR

Sep 3, 2014 - 5:08 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cory Spangenberg's first two Major League hits have been game-winners.

Spangenberg smacked a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in second of a four-game set.

Spangenberg, selected Monday from Double-A San Antonio as part of San Diego's September callups, hit a deciding two-run single in his Major League debut Monday to give the Padres a 3-1 victory.

On Tuesday, after Rymer Liriano lined out to start the ninth, the pinch- hitting Spangenberg cracked a first-pitch sinker off Brad Ziegler (5-3) down the line and into the seats in right.

"It was quick, but productive. He went right after it," Padres manager Bud Black said of Spangenberg's at-bat.

Kevin Quackenbush (3-3) tossed a scoreless ninth to notch the win. Starter Odrismer Despaigne allowed a run on four hits over seven innings for the Padres, who have won six of their last seven games, with four of those triumph's coming in their last at-bat.

Arizona starter Wade Miley yielded a run on seven hits and two walks over seven frames.

The D-backs opened the scoring with a run in the fourth before San Diego got the run back in the fifth.

Cliff Pennington and David Peralta singled to lead off the fourth and put runners on the corners. After Mark Trumbo struck out, Miguel Montero singled to right-center to plate Pennington.

Rene Rivera singled and Liriano doubled to start the fifth. Cameron Maybin struck out, and Alexi Amarista's base hit pushed across Rivera. Liriano stayed put at third, though, as Despaigne was out on a sacrifice bunt attempt and Yangervis Solarte grounded out to end the threat.
