Kemp, Dodgers edge D-backs
Sep 6, 2014 - 5:51 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Kemp smacked a solo homer among his two hits and the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set.Hanley Ramirez was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Dodgers, who remained two games ahead of San Francisco for first place in the NL West.
Dan Haren (12-10) struck out six and allowed a run on four hits and a walk over six innings to notch the win. Kenley Jansen tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 40th save of the year.
"Forty saves is tremendous. I'm happy being consistent," Jansen said.
Vidal Nuno (0-5) surrendered two runs on seven hits and two walks over seven frames for Arizona.
"I missed my spots in the first three innings and I found them after Kemp's home run. I was able to command my pitches after that," Nuno said.
The Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after plating runs in the second and third innings.
A.J. Ellis worked a one-out walk in the second, Haren singled and Ramirez slapped a base hit to right to bring home Ellis.
Kemp led off the third by launching an opposite-field blast over the wall in right. Later in the frame, Didi Gregorius showed off his arm when he backhanded a Justin Turner roller deep in the hole at shortstop and fired off his back foot and across his body to nab Turner at first.
Gregorius then got Arizona on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, trimming the deficit to 2-1, but the D-backs didn't put a runner into scoring position the rest of the way.
Game Notes
The Dodgers were 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while Arizona finished 0-for-3 ... Arizona fired general manager Kevin Towers earlier on Friday. Towers had been the club's GM since September 2010. The Diamondbacks were 320-317 with one division title during his tenure.
