Braves' Teheran shuts out Brewers

May 21, 2014 - 6:03 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran followed up his worst outing of the season with a gem, going the distance to help the Atlanta Braves to a 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the second matchup of a four-game set.

Teheran (3-3) tied a season high by allowing five runs after walking a season- high five batters in 3 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals in his last start.

He was much better against the Brewers on Tuesday, striking out eight and allowing just six hits with two walks in his second career shutout.

"He's usually always on his game," Braves third baseman Chris Johnson said of Teheran. "He's really good. We enjoy playing behind him. He works fast and he goes right after people."

Justin Upton homered and knocked in three for the Braves, who have taken the first two of this series and have won three straight overall. Andrelton Simmons also homered and Teheran helped his cause with an RBI in the win.

Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (2-3) allowed four runs on four hits with three walks over 3 1/3 innings before being taken out due to a sprained left ankle.

With runners on second and third and one out in the fourth, Teheran poked a high chopper up the middle that Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett misplayed to allowed B.J. Upton to score and Teheran to reach first.

Gallardo grimaced in pain after the play, rolling his left ankle in an attempt to make a leaping snag on the grounder. Tyler Thornburg entered for the injured hurler, who was removed after 66 pitches.

"It's a sprain, he's day-to-day," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Gallardo's injury. "We'll see about his next start. He is questionable."

Milwaukee has now lost a season-high four straight games.

Simmons led off the third with a solo homer to left to open the scoring. Gerald Laird then singled and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Teheran.

After Ramiro Pena and Freddie Freeman each walked with two outs to load the bases, Justin Upton proceeded to drive in Laird and Pena with a single to left that made it a 3-0 game.

Teheran's RBI in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-0, and Justin Upton stroked a laser down the right-field line that cleared the wall in the fifth and accounted for the final margin.

The homer was Upton's 12th of the season and third in as many games.

Teheran ran into some trouble in the ninth in his attempt to secure the clean sheet.

Jean Segura led off the inning with a single to center, then Elian Herrera singled up the middle two batters later to put runners at the corners with one out.

Teheran blew pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks away with a 3-2 fastball, however, then got Carlos Gomez to chase a high heater to end it.
