Upton, Braves sweep Phillies

Jun 29, 2014 - 10:57 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - B.J. Upton drove in two runs as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, to complete a four- game sweep on Sunday.

Gerald Laird knocked in a run with a fourth-inning double and Tommy La Stella scored twice for the Braves, who have won six of their last seven.

"To win a four-game set is incredible," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We pitched well the whole series. We swung the bats and had some timely hitting."

Starter Aaron Harang (7-6) earned the win after surrendering two runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.

Marlon Byrd homered twice while Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins both supplied three hits apiece for Philadelphia, which has dropped five of its last six.

"Over the past week or so, we have lacked the big hit," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Hitting in the clutch is something we need to get better at."

David Buchanan (4-4), who entered the game with wins in his last three starts, gave up three runs on five hits and five walks in defeat.

It is the first time that the Braves have taken a four-game sweep over the Phillies in Philadelphia since Sep. 24-27, 1964 at Connie Mack Stadium.

The Braves opened the scoring in the second. La Stella walked and two batters, later Harang singled up the middle. Upton's triple landed just over a leaping Revere in center, scoring both base runners.

In the home half, Byrd countered with a solo shot to left, getting the Phillies within one off his 14th homer of the season.

Back-to-back doubles by La Stella and Laird gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

However, Byrd again responded in the bottom of the frame with a blast to center, making it a 3-2 ball game.

Chase Utley stroked his 1,500th career hit with one out in the seventh to put men at the corners, but Ryan Howard grounded into a double play to leave the runners stranded.

Craig Kimbrel took the mound for Atlanta in the ninth. Revere and Rollins put runners on the corners with two-out singles. Rollins then stole second, but Kimbrel earned his 24th save of the season after getting Utley to fly out to end the game.
