Reds clip Braves to halt long losing skid

Aug 24, 2014 - 4:34 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Phillips singled home Mike Leake with the game's only run, and Cincinnati put the brakes on a seven-game losing skid by clipping Atlanta, 1-0, in the third edition of a four-game series.

Leake (10-11) tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, fanning six and walking three while adding a double for the Reds. Aroldis Chapman shut the door by striking out the side in the ninth to earn his 27th save.

Ervin Santana (13-7) allowed four hits and one run, while issuing one walk and striking out seven for the Braves, who lost for just the second time in their last nine outings.

Cincinnati snapped the scoreless deadlock in the home sixth, as Leake led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored two batters later on a Phillips base hit.

Leake exited after loading the bases by giving up a leadoff double to Andrelton Simmons, then walking Chris Johnson and Evan Gattis after fanning Freddie Freeman and Justin Upton in turn. Jumbo Diaz induced an inning-ending grounder from Tommy La Stella.

Jonathan Broxton allowed a two-out double to Emilio Bonifacio in the eighth, but fanned Simmons swinging to end that frame.

Chapman preserved the one-run margin with strikeouts of Freeman looking, then both Upton and Johnson swinging.

Game Notes

Santana's personal unbeaten string was snapped at seven starts, during which he was 6-0. Prior to Saturday, he last suffered a defeat on July 9 on the road against the Mets ... The game was delayed by rain at the outset by 1 hour, 56 minutes.
