Napoli's four RBI pace Red Sox win over O's
Apr 3, 2014 - 4:22 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer and added a two-run single, as the Boston Red Sox claimed a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the middle test of a three-game series from Camden Yards.David Ortiz added a two-run blast, while Dustin Pedroia finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Red Sox, who bounced back from a 2-1 loss in the opener on Monday.
John Lackey (1-0) lasted six innings, giving up two runs on three hits while fanning six for the win.
"His last outing of spring training was similar to tonight. I thought his first three innings he was as good as we've seen him in any point of time," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "They extended him in the fourth inning for a 35-pitch inning, but he was able to finish out the later innings and turn it over to the bullpen for three solid innings."
Nelson Cruz hit a two-run shot and J.J. Hardy collected two hits for the Orioles.
Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1) came up short in his Baltimore debut, charged in the loss for five hits and four runs with six strikeouts and three walks over six full frames.
"You always want to win, but it is part of the game. That is how it goes. I still have 30 more games to go, so I have to be ready for my next start," Jimenez said.
Napoli restored Boston's two-run edge in the fifth, taking Jimenez deep to center three batters after Daniel Nava was plunked to start the frame.
It was 6-2 for the Sox in the seventh. Nava singled, then moved to third on an infield hit by Pedroia plus Ryan Flaherty's throwing error. An intentional walk to Ortiz loaded the bases, then Nava and Pedroia scored when Napoli followed with a base hit to left.
Edward Mujica, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara kept that lead intact with three scoreless relief innings.
The Sox picked up the game's first runs in the third, Pedroia reached on a one-out single and scored when Ortiz launched a ball over the seats in right field.
Chris Davis walked with two down in the fourth, and came in when Cruz deposited a pitch in an identical spot as the reigning World Series MVP.
Game Notes
Lackey improved to 14-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 24 career starts against Baltimore ... Ortiz and Xander Bogaerts both drew a pair of walks for the Red Sox ... Jimenez was 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA in 32 starts last season with the Cleveland Indians.
