Final
Davis homers as Brewers top Orioles
May 29, 2014 - 6:18 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Khris Davis hit a three-run homer and scored twice in the Milwaukee Brewers' 8-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.Ryan Braun went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Brewers, who won the final two contests of this three-game set. Rickie Weeks, Scooter Gennett and Carlos Gomez each knocked in a run.
Just one night after beating Baltimore with his bat, Yovani Gallardo (3-3) took care of business on the mound. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and five walks over 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first win since April 6.
On Tuesday, Gallardo came on as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning and delivered the game-winning double, as the Brewers rallied for a 7-6 win.
Nelson Cruz hit a pair of solo homers and leads the majors with 19 home runs. The Orioles, who have lost six of 10, also got an RBI from Manny Machado.
Baltimore starter Bud Norris (3-5) gave up four runs on five hits with three walks over six innings.
"That's one of the best teams in the National League, so they got quality starting pitching," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "We knew coming in it was going to be a challenge. We could have very easily won two and possibly three games. I really like our chances if we can keep at 4-3."
The Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Braun walked, moved to second on a Jonathan Lucroy walk and crossed the plate on Gomez's single to right.
After Cruz homered to right in the top of the second, Milwaukee tacked on two more runs in the bottom half. Davis led off with a walk and Lyle Overbay followed with a double to left. Both runners scored on Braun's two-out double to right.
The home team took a 4-1 lead on Gennett's sacrifice fly in the third that scored Gomez, after he was plunked, stole second and went to third on a fly out from Mark Reynolds.
Baltimore, which left the bases loaded in the fourth, got another solo homer from Cruz in the sixth.
The Orioles scored another run in the seventh. Nick Markakis kept the inning alive with a two-out double, then Brandon Kintzler came in from the bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Machado. Adam Jones singled before Will Smith took over on the mound. The runners advanced to second and third on Smith's throwing error, but Chris Davis struck out swinging.
Smith also struck out the side in the eighth inning.
The Brewers put the game away with a four-run eighth. Gomez doubled and Reynolds singled to get things going. The away team then called upon Brian Matusz, who gave up an RBI single to Weeks. Milwaukee's Davis followed with a three-run homer to left.
"To add on late like that -- huge," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "We keep waiting for one of those and we got it."
Game Notes
