Orioles beat Tanaka, Yankees
Jun 22, 2014 - 11:43 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Tillman outpitched Masahiro Tanaka and the Baltimore Orioles took down the New York Yankees, 8-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.Tillman (6-4) scattered four hits and four walks over seven scoreless innings while his teammates handed Tanaka just his second loss of the year.
"When you face Tanaka you have to have a well pitched game," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Jonathan Schoop and Caleb Joseph both homered and drove in a pair of runs, while J.J. Hardy went 2-for-4 with a three-run double for Baltimore, which has won four of its last five to pull even with the Yankees for second place in the AL East.
Tanaka (11-2) had a five-start winning streak snapped after allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings of work.
"He's not going to be perfect," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of his rookie starter.
New York had won four in a row before losing the final two games of the set.
Tanaka retired three straight after giving up a pair of singles to start the game, but he hung a 2-2 slider in the second inning that Schoop waited on and golfed into the left-field seats for a 1-0 Baltimore lead.
It was the 29th home run of the month for the Orioles, who showed they can play small ball in the seventh.
Hardy led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Manny Machado's double to center. Schoop knocked in Hardy with a groundout to short, and Machado raced home on Joseph's sacrifice fly.
Tillman made the lead hold, albeit with some help.
Brett Gardner appeared to lead off the home first with a triple, but replay showed he slid over the bag as Machado held the tag and the call was reversed.
Tillman induced an inning-ending double play ball off the bat of Derek Jeter to get out of the third and stranded two in the fourth when he snagged Kelly Johnson's line-drive comebacker.
The Orioles padded the lead against Adam Warren in the eighth, as Hardy stepped up with the bases loaded and cleared the bags with a double to right field.
Hardy came around on a Machado single, and Joseph's first career longball in the ninth accounted for the final margin.
T.J. McFarland tossed the final two innings behind Tillman to finish off the shutout.
