Mariners edge Orioles
Jul 27, 2014 - 2:05 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Ackley scored twice and the Seattle Mariners held on for a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the third of a four-game set.Robinson Cano, Kendrys Morales, Kyle Seager and Logan Morrison all drove in a run for the Mariners, who snapped a four-game slide. Chris Young (9-6) gave up just two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings for the win.
"They are a very capable team over there and we saw how they can score runs quickly," said Young. "It just goes to show that in the league you can't lose focus at all."
J.J. Hardy drove in a run for the Orioles, who had taken the first two games of the series. Bud Norris (8-7) allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in the loss.
The Mariners went on top in the third inning as the team loaded the bases with one out and Morales brought in the first run after he was hit by a pitch. Seager then singled in a run, and Morrison's RBI single made it a 3-0 game.
Seattle pushed across another run in the fifth as Dustin Ackley doubled and Cano followed with a double for a 4-0 advantage.
Baltimore had left men on second and third in the fifth, and were then retired in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
The Orioles, though, rallied in the eighth to make it a one-run game.
With Danny Farquhar on the mound, Adam Jones got plunked with two outs and Nelson Cruz walked, bringing Joe Beimel out of the bullpen. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base, and a hard-hit grounder by Chris Davis to third was missed by Kyle Seager, allowing both runners to score.
Davis wound up at second base on the play, and Hardy punched a single to left off Yoervis Medina to make it a one-run game. Manny Machado grounded back to the mound to end the inning.
"We came back and scored three to give us a chance in the ninth," said Davis. "Their starter was real good today, though."
In the ninth, Fernando Rodney walked David Lough with one out, but then got Nick Markakis to fly out. Lough then tried to steal second base, but Rodney was able to step off the mound and easily get him for the final out and his 28th save of the season.
Game Notes
Young had lost his previous two decisions ... Norris has lost two of his last three starts ... Baltimore stranded seven men on base.
