Cubs use 4-run 2nd to top O's
Aug 24, 2014 - 3:00 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Coghlan hit a bases-clearing triple as part of a four-run second inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Baltimore Orioles, 7-2, in the middle test of a three-game set.A 3-hour, 9-minute rain delay followed Chicago's four-run second.
Javier Baez smacked a solo homer, while Justin Grimm (4-2) fired 3 1/3 scoreless innings following the delay to earn the win for the Cubs, who have won five of their last seven games.
"We have the talent to win. I think why Baltimore wins so often and why they're so good is how consistent they are. That's an area of growth we could use," Coghlan said.
Bud Norris (11-8) allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over the first two frames for Baltimore, which has dropped two straight on the heels of a four- game winning streak.
"They got a good team that's young and up-and-coming," Norris said of the Cubs.
The Orioles led 2-0 before the Cubs erupted for four runs in the second to go in front.
Luis Valbuena worked a leadoff walk and Ryan Sweeney struck out before Welington Castillo and Arismendy Alcantara both singled to load the bases. Logan Watkins lined a base hit to left to plate Valbuena and after Kyle Hendricks fanned, Coghlan ripped a triple into the right-field corner to clear the bases and give the Cubs a 4-2 advantage.
Chicago added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Chris Valaika hit an RBI single in the sixth, Baez lined his leadoff blast in the seventh into the seats in right and Watkins' RBI double in the eighth made it 7-2.
Adam Jones' RBI double in the first got Baltimore on the board and Norris' RBI single in the second gave the O's their 2-0 edge.
