O's complete DH sweep of Yanks behind Norris

Sep 13, 2014 - 3:54 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Bud Norris' season-high 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings put the finishing touches on a doubleheader sweep for the Baltimore Orioles, who posted a sixth consecutive win with a 5-0 decision over the New York Yankees.

Norris (13-8) limited New York's sputtering offense to three singles and a pair of walks to follow up a similarly outstanding effort from Kevin Gausman in Baltimore's 2-1, 11-inning triumph in the opener.

"It's hard to win when you only score one run in 18 innings," a frustrated Yankees manager Joe Girardi said afterward. "I thought we had a pretty decent shot to win the first game when we scored the one run [in the top of the 11th], but tonight we didn't do anything off of Norris."

Alejandro De Aza contributed a pair of RBI triples to the victory, with Delmon Young adding a two-run single to help the Orioles record their longest win streak of the season and reduce their magic number to clinch the AL East to five.

The Yankees' Bryan Mitchell (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits over five innings in his first career major league start.

Baltimore stranded five runners against Mitchell over the game's first three innings, but finally broke through on the rookie in the fourth.

A leadoff walk to David Lough led to the first run of the night after Ryan Flaherty drilled an RBI double into the gap in left-center. Two batters later, De Aza whacked a line drive to the wall in right-center for a triple that increased the Orioles' lead to 2-0.

That was enough for Norris, who got stronger as the game went along. The right-hander yielded just one hit after the second inning and registered seven of his 10 strikeouts over his final four frames.

"That was about as good as I've seen him," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "Changeup, cutter, breaking ball enough, a little late-life fastball. One of our points of emphasis this spring was to defend himself better against (left-handed hitters) and he's done a good job with it."

Young gave Baltimore some insurance by coming through with a two-out single in the seventh that pushed two more runs across after New York's David Phelps loaded the bases by walking three straight hitters.

De Aza's second RBI triple of the night, a shot off the scoreboard in right in the eighth, came after Jonathan Schoop reached on a wild pitch by Chaz Roe on a strikeout.

Game Notes

The Yankees were swept in a doubleheader for only the second time since 2000, having gone 16-2-19 over that span. Boston accomplished the feat against New York on Sept. 17, 2006 ... Baltimore is now 6-1 against the Yankees at Camden Yards in 2014 and 10-3 in the season series ... De Aza has now hit safely in eight straight games since being acquired by the Orioles from the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 31 ... Brett Gardner returned to the Yankee lineup after missing six straight games with an abdominal strain and went 1-for-3 with a walk ... Phelps was activated from the disabled list prior to Friday's opener. He had been sidelined since August 3 by elbow inflammation.
