Final/10
A's down Red Sox in 10 innings
May 5, 2014 - 4:51 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yoenis Cespedes' infield single in the 10th inning helped the Oakland Athletics salvage the final game of a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox with a 3-2 decision on Sunday at Fenway Park. With the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th, Cespedes poked a dribbler down the third-base line. Will Middlebrooks attempted to make the play on the slow roller, but his throw wasn't in time as Jed Lowrie crossed home for the deciding run.
Jim Johnson (3-2) recorded the final two outs of the ninth and worked around a leadoff single from Middlebrooks in the 10th to earn the win.
Cespedes finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and Brandon Moss also collected two hits with an RBI in the win.
"Nobody ever wants to get swept by a team," said Oakland infielder Josh Donaldson. "They got a great ball club over there, and for us to continue to fight the way that we did throughout the series, I think that shows the kind of guys we have here."
Chris Capuano (1-1) took the loss after loading the bases in the 10th before Burke Badenhop relieved him with two outs. Badenhop got Cespedes down 0-2 in the count and unleashed a sinker on the outside corner that was tapped down the line.
A.J. Pierzynski hit his third homer of the season and Grady Sizemore went 2- for-2 with and RBI. Sizemore was removed in the seventh inning for pinch- hitter Jonny Gomes.
A's starter Sonny Gray and Boston's John Lackey each received a no-decision, with both allowing two runs over six innings of work.
Oakland got to Lackey with an RBI single from Moss that plated Donaldson.
Mike Carp and Pierzynski each opened the fifth inning with singles and Sizemore ripped a double down the first-base line to tie the game at 1-1.
Cespedes crushed a double off the Green Monster in left-center that plated Donaldson to help the A's regain the lead after six.
The margin didn't last long, with Pierzynski blasting a solo homer to right- center to lead off the seventh.
Middlebrooks led off the home half of the 10th with a single and reached second on an error by Coco Crisp on the play.
Jackie Bradley Jr. attempted to bunt Middlebrooks over to third in the next at-bat, but his first attempt went foul and Johnson snuck one across the plate for strike two.
Two pitches later, Bradley slapped one to first baseman Daric Barton, who astutely fired over to third and nailed Middlebrooks for the first out in the inning.
"This was a day in which we tried to manufacture runs to tie it up or just get a one-run lead," said Red Sox manager John Farrell.
Dustin Pedroia then grounded into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
