Indians end Red Sox winning streak at 7
Jun 3, 2014 - 4:06 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Asdrubal Cabrera's third-inning RBI single proved to be the difference as Cleveland put the brakes on Boston's seven-game win streak with a 3-2 victory in Monday's opener of a three-game series.Lonnie Chisenhall added a two-run hit for the Indians, while Michael Bourn reached base three times on two singles and a walk and scored twice.
Justin Masterson (3-4) fanned 10 over seven scoreless frames, giving up four walks and three hits for the win. Cody Allen tossed a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
"We were fundamentally sound tonight," Masterson said. "We did what we were supposed to. We pitched pretty good and we put some runs on the board."
Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox, who had recorded sweeps of Atlanta and Tampa Bay in the last week to erase the memory of a 10- game slide.
John Lackey (6-4) went the distance in defeat, allowing eight hits and three runs.
Bourn's triple opened the home third and he came in when Cabrera lined a ball through the right side and Cleveland went on top by a 3-0 score.
Masterson struck out the side on nine pitches in the fourth, then Lackey worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fifth after inducing a double-play grounder from Cabrera.
Jason Kipnis was stranded on third in the home sixth when Jason Giambi grounded out, and it came back to haunt the hosts a little later on.
Brock Holt hit a leadoff single against Bryan Shaw in the eighth and scored when Bogaerts barely cleared the wall in right center to bring the Red Sox within 3-2. Shaw exited after a Dustin Pedroia grounder and Marc Rzepczynski ended the inning by inducing a fly out from David Ortiz.
Allen preserved the one-run margin thanks to a 1-2-3 final frame.
Lackey walked Bourn and Michael Brantley in the first, then a Kipnis grounder moved both into scoring position ahead of Chisenhall's two-run single.
"I put myself in the situation with the two walks," Lackey said of the first inning. "Bottom line, I can't walk those two guys. I haven't been walking two guys in a game much less in an inning."
