Swisher lifts Indians past Red Sox in 11th
Jun 16, 2014 - 4:12 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Swisher's 11th-inning home run led the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the final installment of a four-game set.Swisher clubbed a leadoff homer to right off Junichi Tazawa (1-1) during the 11th and Michael Brantley homered in the first for the Indians, who won their second straight game on the heels of a four-game skid.
"To come up huge like that...was crucial," beamed Swisher. "I was stoked."
Cody Allen (3-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless 10th and 11th with three strikeouts. Starter Corey Kluber was lifted after 5 1/3 innings after allowing two runs on five with four walks and four strikeouts.
David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia each drove in a run and starter Brandon Workman gave up two runs on five hits with a season-high seven strikeouts across six frames in Boston's second straight loss.
"We're pressing just a little," Red Sox third baseman Brock Holt said.
The Indians tied the game in the seventh. David Murphy walked and Carlos Santana singled to right to put men on first and third with no outs and end Workman's outing.
Yan Gomes' sacrifice fly to deep left off Burke Badenhop plated Murphy to even the game at two.
The Red Sox loaded the bases with three walks off John Axford in the ninth, but Scott Atchison took over and induced an inning-ending groundout from Holt.
Brantley's right-field blast opened the scoring in the first for the Indians.
The Red Sox answered back in the home half. Holt singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Pedroia's groundout. Ortiz's single off the green monster in left plated Holt to tie the score. Ortiz was thrown out at second on the play.
Jackie Bradley Jr. walked and Holt singled to put men on the corners for the Red Sox with one out in the fifth. Holt was thrown out at second on Pedroia's ensuing grounder, but the throw to first wasn't in time to turn the double- play and Bradley scored to put Boston ahead, 2-1.
