Angels keep rolling, beat Red Sox despite losing Richards

Aug 21, 2014 - 5:46 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Hamilton posted two hits and three RBI, as Los Angeles rallied past Boston by an 8-3 count in the third portion of a four-game set from Fenway Park.

Howie Kendrick contributed a pair of hits and drove in two for the Angels, who have won seven of their last eight and moved a season-high 25 games over .500.

Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols also knocked in a run each, while Cory Rasmus (3-1) allowed one run over 2 1/3 relief innings to snag the win. Starter Garrett Richards departed with a left knee patellar injury after giving up two runs on five hits and recording five outs.

Following the contest, Halos manager Mike Scioscia simply stated that the injury is "significant" without elaborating.

David Ortiz finished 4-for-4 with a solo homer for the Red Sox, who recorded their 70th loss of the season. Yoenis Cespedes and David Ross added an RBI each in defeat.

Clay Buchholz (5-8) was tagged in defeat for six runs on seven hits despite fanning five and walking only two over six full frames.

Down 3-0, Los Angeles rallied with one in the fourth as Kendrick's two-out single scored Hamilton, then tacked on five more in the fifth to seize control.

"It was huge for us to come back and put some runs on the board," said Trout.

The first six batters managed to reach base to start the frame, with Calhoun's bases-loaded walk forcing in the first run. Trout reached when his bloop to right forced out Calhoun at second but scored Chris Iannetta. Pujols plated one more on a single, Hamilton brought in Trout with a fly to center and Kendrick capped the burst by sending home Pujols on a hit for a 6-3 contest.

"I felt good for just about every pitch," said Buchholz. "I just missed location with a couple of pitches and they were able to put a big inning together."

Calhoun hit a leadoff double in the seventh and later came home on a Hamilton sacrifice fly for a four-run spread. Boston failed to chip away at its deficit in the bottom half despite two in scoring position.

Collin Cowgill began the ninth with a hit, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Hamilton's two-out hit to account for the final margin.

The Red Sox jumped ahead early by scoring single runs in each of their first three turns at the plate.

In the first inning, Dustin Pedroia and Ortiz singled to put runners on the corners and a Cespedes fly scored Pedroia. The second inning featured a single from Kelly Johnson, walk to Xander Bogaerts and RBI hit from Ross, while Ortiz brought the crowd to life with a solo shot into the bullpen.
