Marlins take series finale from Cubs
Jun 9, 2014 - 1:55 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch with two down in the eighth inning, as Miami pulled out a 4-3 decision against Chicago in Sunday's finale of a three-game series.Garrett Jones, Adeiny Hechavarria and J.T. Realmuto drove in a run each for the Marlins, who avoided a sweep and have won five of their last seven.
Mike Dunn (5-3) struck out two while recording two outs in relief for the win. Henderson Alvarez departed in the sixth due to a left hip strain after giving up one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts. He is listed as day-to-day.
Nate Schierholtz produced a two-run triple and Luis Valbuena knocked in the other run for the Cubs, whose five-game win streak came to a halt.
Pedro Strop (0-3) surrendered the deciding runs in the eighth to take the loss.
He walked Christian Yelich to start the frame, then hit Stanton two batters later. Casey McGehee's single loaded the bases before a Jones fly to center plated Yelich with the tying run. Marcell Ozuna was given a free pass, then a Strop offering got away from catcher John Baker to score Stanton.
Dunn, who gave up Chicago's presumed lead run in the bottom of the seventh before retiring Schierholtz, exited with a runner on second and one away in the eighth. Bryan Morris came on and set down the next two batters in order.
Steve Cishek fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 14th save.
"We're never down and out," Jones said. "We have a lot of confidence in our team."
Chicago picked up the game's first runs in the home sixth. Starlin Castro hit a one-out double, Luis Valbuena added a single, then Alvarez exited the contest for Dan Jennings, who immediately served up a two-run triple from Schierholtz.
Cubs starter Jake Arrieta came out and the visitors knotted the score in the seventh off Brian Schlitter. McGehee walked with one away and Ozuna's infield hit kept the frame alive, before back-to-back RBI singles from Realmuto and Hechavarria pulled Miami even.
In the home seventh, a hit-by-pitch, pop double and intentional walk filled the sacks with one out. Castro fanned, but Valbuena showed patience against Dunn and forced in a run with a walk.
"Even though we lost, we're going to Pittsburgh on a high note based on how well we've played," Arrieta said.
