Hendricks, Cubs silence Brewers
Aug 13, 2014 - 4:15 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Hendricks pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning as the Chicago Cubs bested the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-0, in the second meeting of a four-game series between the division foes.Hendricks (4-1) has made an immediate impact since being called up to the big leagues, and the 24-year-old's latest gem had him limiting the NL Central leaders to six hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings.
"That's something I've always done since I was little, is pitch quick," Hendricks said. "The pace of the game is big for me."
The rookie right-hander, who was making his sixth start, ran into trouble in the eighth and was pulled with the bases loaded, and Pedro Strop kept the Brewers off the board by getting Jonathan Lucroy to bounce into a double play.
Justin Ruggiano and Arismendy Alcantara both went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Anthony Rizzo added a solo homer for the victors.
Wily Peralta (14-7) squandered a chance at becoming MLB's first 15-game winner by surrendering three runs on seven hits across 6 1/3 innings.
"He struggled with his command," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "He made some great pitches but overall he battled."
Peralta had won five straight starts coming in and was 10-1 in his previous 11 decisions. He was the victim of defensive adjustments in the second and fourth innings and coughed up Rizzo's 26th home run of the year in the sixth.
The Brewers had the infield in with a runner on third and one out in the second, and Ruggiano laced a single into the hole between short and third to bring in Alcantara.
The same situation arose in the fourth with the same outcome, as Alcantara's base hit to right got past a diving Mark Reynolds at first and allowed Starlin Castro to score.
Rizzo went the other way for his first home run since July 22, and after Strop escaped the eighth-inning jam, Hector Rondon hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to collect his 15th save of the season.
Game Notes
