Hutchison, Blue Jays complete sweep of Cubs

Sep 11, 2014 - 6:04 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Hutchison tossed 6 1/3 strong innings and was backed with plenty of offensive support as the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with an 11-1 victory on Wednesday.

Hutchison (10-11) surrendered just one run on four hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts to earn the win.

"He was outstanding," said Toronto catcher Dioner Navarro.

Edwin Encarnacion, Navarro and Danny Valencia each drove in two runs and Anthony Gose had two hits, an RBI and three runs scored for the Blue Jays, who have won four straight games.

Kyle Hendricks (6-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on six hits and two walks across 5 2/3 frames to snap a string of five straight winning decisions.

"Sometimes you just go through slumps, and you have to have somebody that can stop that," Hendricks said. "It starts on the mound with the starters, setting the tone."

The Cubs matched a season high with their sixth straight loss and were outscored by a 28-3 margin in the series.

Toronto opened the scoring in the third. Kevin Pillar stroked a liner over the head of Chris Coghlan in left for a leadoff double and moved to third on Ryan Goins' groundout. Gose lined out directly to Coghlan, who immediately threw to Valencia at third. Pillar slid underneath the tag of catcher Welington Castillo for a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Coghlan hit a ground-rule double with two outs and was left stranded after Hutchison struck out Javier Baez to end the frame.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the home half to take control of the game. Gose led off with a base hit to right and came home after right fielder Jorge Soler misplayed Reyes' liner in shallow right. Reyes moved to third after Jose Bautista lined out to right.

Two batters later, Adam Lind laced a hit to right for an RBI single. Navarro walked and Valencia's fly ball of the center-field wall drove in Lind for a 4-0 advantage.

Soler got the Cubs on the board in the seventh with a solo shot to right. Castillo followed with a double and moved to third after Gose dropped the ball in center field. Brett Cecil took the mound and walked Junior Lake to place runners at the corners with one out, but left them stranded after retiring the next two batters.

Reyes and Gose both singled off Wesley Wright with one out in the bottom portion, then Kyuji Fujikawa walked Bautista to load the bases. Encarnacion ripped a single up the middle to score two and Navarro followed in similar fashion after Lind was intentionally walked. Pinch-runner Steve Tolleson replaced Lind at third and came home on Valencia's RBI single for a 9-1 score.

Dalton Pompey drove in a run with a groundout and Tolleson hit an RBI single in the eighth accounted for the final score.

Game Notes
